This morning there was a wave of calls from “wrong police officers” or calls from “wrong doctors” in the area of responsibility of the Bitburg police station.
Warning about a current wave of calls from “fake police officers” and “fake doctors” in the Bitburg area – the most important thing to start with:
Callers pretend to be police officers or doctors in order to obtain money or valuables from the victims. All of these calls are a scam!
Callers pretend to be police officers
In many of the cases reported to the police, the callers pretended to be police officers from the Bitburg police and reported that burglars had recently been arrested and that a list of names had been found with them. The name of the person called was also included on this list. In this context, those called were also asked about valuables and money.
The callers usually try to unsettle the people they are calling so much that they agree to hand over money or valuables to the supposed police officer. For this purpose, a “handover date” is agreed.
In order to suggest seriousness, the person called was then allegedly forwarded to the Bitburg police number. A corresponding recorded announcement and forwarding to another “official” were simulated.

Callers pretend to be doctors
In other cases, the callers pretended to be doctors from the health department or Bitburg Hospital. They explained to those they called that they had been classified as a high-risk patient due to the current corona pandemic and that they now wanted to be tested accordingly.
In this regard, they want to visit the person being called at their home address in order to carry out the investigation. However, the test only takes place for a fee of EUR 200. This must be paid on site.
Call fraud
All of these calls were a scam designed purely to get money or valuables from predominantly older people.
The calls were not made by the Bitburg police station, the hospital or the health department.
In this context, the Bitburg police once again expressly warn against giving callers information about personal circumstances or even handing over money or valuables.
Further information about the “Fake Police Officers” scam can be found on the Rhineland-Palatinate Police website .

Tips from your Bitburg police
The police will never ask you for money or ask you to hand over money or valuables.
The police will never call you on the police emergency number 110. Only scammers do that.
If you are unsure, dial 110. However, do not use the callback button, otherwise you may end up back with the scammers, but always dial the number yourself.
You can also contact the local police station. Tell the officers about the calls. It is best to have the number of your local police department and the emergency number 110 handy on the phone so that you can call them yourself if in doubt.
Put down the phone! That's not rude.
