The police in the Uelzen/Lüneburg/Lüchow-Dannenberg region are warning about dubious craftsmen and current craft offers. In the past, traveling tradesmen had often traveled mostly in rural areas and spontaneously offered their work (including roof work and plumbing, terrace and stone cleaning work, concrete work, etc.) on site “over the garden fence” for a bargain price In the last few days and weeks, various regional newspapers have published glossy brochures and flyers from various companies for building, stone and terrace cleaning work. Checks of the contact details and addresses revealed that some of these companies do not exist/are registered at the addresses provided.

Spring: Boom for fraudulent tradesman offers

The time for spring cleaning and gardening is coming. It's a good thing, friendly gentlemen and ladies talk to you at the garden fence and ask if you can spruce up the garden for what seems like a small amount of money. The offer sounds tempting; everything can be completed for just a few thousand euros. On a note it says something about gardening work and that they received money for the job. No company address, no bank details, no responsibilities, it doesn't matter, it has to be done quickly!

In no time, the flatbed truck - the license plate is not from the region and a company log is also missing - is unloaded and work begins like a raid on all the corners/curves of the garden. But suddenly the work is stopped because there is supposedly a lack of material that still needs to be fetched. Everything is invited, including the client's own garden tools, and the troops don't come back.

In the last few days, several property owners from the region reported to the police because traveling tradesmen had appeared at their location uninvited. At the end of March, garden workers who were driving a Ford Transit with a “Stader license plate” demanded 40,000 euros from an 86-year-old from the Aue municipality (LK Uelzen) to clean the terrace and remove molehills. The man didn't pay the entire amount, which was way too high; but still more than 6,000 euros. The police are investigating usury.

Bargains that appear at first glance often hide cost traps, so the police advise carefully examining relevant companies and offers and comparing them with possible offers from craft companies in the region with a good reputation.

Particularly at risk: seniors

Fraudsters particularly often target seniors at the front door who supposedly feel safe within their four walls. The aim of these unpleasant visitors is to be invited into the apartment; As a rule, there are no witnesses or other people to be expected there who could thwart one's own plans. A fraudster's sinister intentions are rarely visible. The perpetrators appear in very different roles: sometimes they pose as a seriously dressed businessman, sometimes they present themselves as a craftsman in work clothes, as a person in need of help or even as an alleged official.

In order to achieve their goal, the perpetrators continually surprise with their extraordinary inventiveness. The financial damage they cause is often impossible to make up for. Attention homeowners – decline any offers from migrant workers offering spontaneous construction work on your property (particularly roofing and paving work). Work that is actually started immediately only serves as a deception and is often not completed or is carried out improperly. Never pay money in advance!

At the same time, the police advise:

  • Do not do business at the front door or garden gate.
  • Get a detailed, written offer.
  • Get comparison offers
  • Never pay in advance on site or spend money on materials.
  • Write down the details of the provider and the vehicle you are traveling with.

If you see such “dubious traveling tradesmen”, please contact the police – in an emergency on 110.
