Several cases of “skimming” have recently become known. The police would like to raise awareness among ATM users based on the following issues.
1st case: At an ATM located in Wolfenbüttel in the Harztorwall, the perpetrators installed a camera on the ATM between 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on May 12, 2022. This would make it possible to record the PIN entry.

2nd case: At another ATM, which is also located in Wolfenbüttel in the Harztorwall, the perpetrators installed an unknown device in the area of the card slot on April 23rd, 2022, 11:00 a.m. - April 25th, 2022, 7:50 a.m. This was obviously installed with the intention of reading the data from the credit card used.

3rd case: Another crime scene is located in Salzgitter on Fischzug Street. The perpetrators had installed a camera at an ATM between May 5th, 2022, 6:50 p.m. and May 6th, 2022, 12:15 p.m. in order to obviously be able to read the PIN entered by the user. Furthermore, a circuit board was inserted into the card reader, which obviously made it possible to read the card data.
We raise awareness and would like to give you valuable tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.
- The term skimming comes from English and means something like “skimming” or “skimming”. With this scam, the electronic card data is to be read or spied on in order to later access the account holders' money.
- Manipulated card readers are installed at the ATM by the perpetrators. When the account holder inserts his bank card into the reader, the magnetic stripe is read by the third-party reader.
- The PIN entered is often captured using a camera. With the data they have now obtained, the perpetrators can create duplicate cards that can be used to withdraw cash. The account holder then only notices days later that cash has been withdrawn from his account.
- Account statement printers or other terminals are also increasingly being manipulated.
How can you protect yourself:
- Keep your access data safe and always separate the bank card from the PIN.
- If you find something strange about the machine, don't use it.
- Always cover one hand over the input field when entering your PIN with the other hand.
- Check the machine. If they notice that modifications have been made or other unknown items have been installed, inform the bank or the police.
- If possible, avoid ATMs located outside, as these can often be tampered with.
- A PIN is never required when entering the bank, so be careful here.
- If you suspect that your card has been read, you are urgently asked to have the card blocked via the nationwide blocking emergency number 116116. In any case, inform the police and file a report.
