Criminal police investigators have recently recorded an increasing number of reports of a brazen extortion scam. A 20-year-old German also fell victim to this scam on April 25, 2022.
The man from the Rostock district met a woman yesterday, Monday, via a social network on the Internet and initially chatted with her. As the chat continued, the 20-year-old was persuaded through clever conversation to undress in front of a webcam and perform sexual acts on himself. This was probably recorded by the woman. The unknown woman then demanded 250 euros from the man and threatened to publish the video on various websites if he did not pay the money. The 20-year-old decided not to respond to the blackmail and instead to call the police. The criminal police have started further investigations.
Sextortion
The phenomenon of such blackmail involving intimate recordings is called “sextortion” and is made up of the words “sex” and “extortion”. What starts as a harmless flirt ends with high demands for money.
Protect yourself by never sending intimate photos or videos of yourself to people you don't know well enough. Don't allow yourself to be persuaded to undress in front of the webcam during online chats. Perpetrators use these moments to make their own recordings and use them to blackmail their victims later. If you have fallen for such scammers: Do not transfer any money, but report to the police and file a criminal complaint! Also warn young people in your circle of friends about this scam.
