As is usual with the scam, they initially received a message from an unknown number, with the sender pretending to be a son or daughter with a new cell phone number. The alleged relatives then pretended that they had to transfer an urgent bill, but were unable to make an online transfer because of their new cell phone. The victims willingly stepped in and transferred the money in the belief that they would pay bills for their child.
In Kassel, a couple who made three transfers and filed a police report on Wednesday lost over 5,000 euros to fraudsters. There were two cases in the Werra-Meißner district on Tuesday in which the perpetrators stole almost 2,000 euros each (see press release from the Eschwege police ).
Notice of fraud via WhatsApp
The police in North Hesse would like to use these cases as an opportunity to once again point out the scam via WhatsApp and warn against it.
The attached screenshot, which comes from a real fraud attempt, shows how the perpetrators make contact and how the scam begins.

Protect yourself from this scam
The police also provide the following tips to protect against this fraud:
- In general, be suspicious of requests for money, whether by post, email, telephone or messenger service.
- Call the person at the number you know or personally verify that the message actually came from them.
- If you are contacted by a (supposedly) known person at an unknown number, do not save the number automatically.
- Under no circumstances should you allow yourself to be put under pressure and tricked into making a hasty transfer.
- Inform your relatives about this scam and make arrangements.
- If you have become a victim: Report it to the police and inform your bank immediately in order to possibly stop or reverse payments.
