It is the order of the day that we save energy and there are numerous excellent tips on how to do this from consumer advice centers or Stiftung Warentest, for example.
At the same time, countless energy-saving devices are offered in online stores that do not meet legal requirements.
The use of such devices is not permitted.
Given the current state of technology, the energy saving effects of such devices are also questionable
, says Klaus Müller, President of the Federal Network Agency.
Such products sometimes promise that electricity bills will be significantly reduced. The Federal Network Agency has checked various types of such devices and found numerous formal deficiencies.
Energy saving function often questionable
The energy saving boxes tested by the Federal Network Agency are intended to stabilize the flow of electricity in the household and thus lead to lower electricity bills. It would be enough to plug such a device into the socket. The Federal Network Agency found that the components of the devices were often improperly connected and that soldered connections were missing.
Such products are advertised using terms such as energy or electricity saving box, electrical saving box or energy saving device. These should not be confused with efficient energy-saving lamps, energy-saving thermostats or similar products that meet European requirements and actually enable energy savings.
Numerous deficiencies identified during formal testing
The energy-saving devices purchased online by the Federal Network Agency via test purchases outside the EU had visible formal defects, such as incorrect CE markings, missing German operating instructions and a missing responsible contact person. This can have an impact on consumers, as no claims can be made against responsible companies in the event of a guarantee or even damage. The operation of such defective devices is not permitted in Germany.
Market monitoring by the Federal Network Agency
The Federal Network Agency regularly carries out checks on electrical devices and radio products, sometimes following information from consumers. These take place both online and in stationary stores. Anonymous test purchases are also carried out. There is also intensive cooperation with the customs authorities to stop non-compliant products at the EU's external border. Nevertheless, products continue to reach consumers that do not meet European standards and safety requirements. Conspicuous products are no longer allowed to be offered and are subject to market restrictive measures.
Online Ordering: Tips for Consumers
- Order online from reputable and well-known sources. Find out about the provider beforehand, for example from consumer advice centers or Stiftung Warentest.
- Check whether an address in the EU is provided where you can reach the provider or its partner. This address must be indicated on the product or its packaging, package or in an accompanying document.
- Make sure that information about general terms and conditions (GTC) as well as cancellation and return instructions are available.
- Check the product description carefully. Pay particular attention to the fact that there are references to a German-language operating manual.
- The price should be plausible compared to competitors.
- If you are unsure, ask the seller questions about the product. Reputable sellers answer questions quickly and happily.
- Make sure that the plug type can also be used in Germany.
