Fraudsters often try to get money over the phone

As the LPD Upper Austria reported in a press release , on July 10, 2018 at around 1:40 p.m. a man in Wels received a call on his private phone.

When a phone number appeared on the display, the 60-year-old picked up. On the other end of the phone line, a man with rather broken German identified himself as an employee of a large bank. He made it clear to him that he and his entire family had accumulated significant gambling debts and that he should transfer them immediately.

The 60-year-old interrupted the conversation and told the unknown man that he would hand the matter over to his lawyer and immediately ended the conversation. At no time was an exact amount of money requested.

When I called back the number sent, it had no connection.

According to current knowledge, the telephone number 01/40420042399 used in the fraud attempts. The police ask for caution.

also warns of telephone scammers who call this number:

A new scam is currently in circulation: On the phone, the caller pretends to be an employee of a Schwarz law firm and explains that the customer has not responded to a letter. That's why his account is now blocked.

The scammer called 01 40420042399 .

This is what you should do:

  • Under no circumstances should you disclose sensitive data such as account number or PIN.
  • Report this to the nearest police station immediately!

The following generally applies to suspicious calls:

  • Be suspicious.
  • Simply hang up the phone as soon as the person you are talking to demands money from you.
  • Avoid the answer: Yes.
  • Do not reveal any details about your family or financial circumstances.
  • Never give money to unknown people.
  • If you have become a victim: contact the police and file a report.
