As our cooperation partners at Watchlist Internet report, various versions of this attempted fraud are currently circulating.
For example, consumers receive an email from the Copyright Lawyer (Copyrightslawyer.eu) or EU LAW LIMITED (LawLimited.eu) with the subject “Warning for copyright infringement” or with the subject “Warning for copyright infringement 20th Century Fox”. The email we received came from IPlimited.eu and had the subject “Last payment request before lawsuit”.
Do consumers have to pay the 420.36 euros?
No, consumers do not have to transfer the 420.36 euros to the Copyright Lawyer or EU Law Limited, because there is no legal reason for this: the warning for copyright infringement is fraudulent. You can see this from the following points, among others:
- Lawyers generally do not send warnings about copyright infringements by email, but by letter.
- The criminal senders do not name the alleged infringers: the warning only contains the greeting “Dear Mr./Ms.” This is usually not the case with legal letters.
- The email generally states that “on November 22, 2017, a copyright infringement occurred on the following illegal streaming platform: Movie4k.to via your Internet connection.” Normally, lawyers go into detail about a specific legal violation: for example, they name the exact time of the copyright violation or the work that the infringers have copied without permission.
- Copyrightslawyer.eu or LawLimited.eu appear as the sender of the warning for copyright infringement. The domains were registered on March 1st and March 3rd, 2018 respectively. Some links on the websites lead nowhere. This is dubious.
- Message recipients should transfer the outstanding amount of money to a British account. In each of the fake warnings sent out, the same invoice number is mentioned. This is dubious and would not enable proper allocation of monetary payments in an emergency.
The Internet Watchlist recommends:
Move the warnings from Copyright Lawyers or EU Law Limited to your spam folder. This means that you will no longer find similar fraudulent emails in your inbox in the future! You do not have to pay the amount of money requested!
