Last week, a 58-year-old man from the district received a call from an alleged Microsoft employee. The fraudster managed to obtain bank details, which led to several thousand euros being debited from the victim's account.

“Online banking account hacked”

Under the pretext that his online banking account had been hacked and security checks were now required, the alleged Microsoft employee contacted the 58-year-old in the middle of last week. The stranger apparently seemed so convincing that the injured party had no doubts.

He first logged into his online account and then carried out the steps on the computer that the caller requested. He also named TAN numbers that the fraudster asked for. According to available information, the caller probably also managed to gain direct access to the 58-year-old's computer.

At the end of the week, the fraudster contacted the injured party again as agreed and a similar procedure followed. After the 58-year-old was no longer able to log into online banking after the phone calls, he became suspicious. As it turned out, a total amount in the lower five-figure range had been debited from his account.

The police give the following tips in this context:

  • Reputable companies such as Microsoft do not contact their customers without being asked!
  • If a service employee contacts you without you asking: Just hang up!
  • Under no circumstances should you give out private data, e.g. bank account, credit card details or access data to customer accounts (e.g. PayPal)!
  • Never give an unknown caller access to your computer, regardless of the circumstances, for example to install remote maintenance software!
