Numerous Internet users are currently finding what appears to be an email from BAWAG PSK in their inbox. It claims that your bank account has been restricted because you don't have the security app installed. You are urged to click on a link and do so. Do not follow these instructions under any circumstances, you will be taken to a fake login page.

As described in the phishing email above, your access to the bank account has allegedly been restricted, which is why you should now follow the link in the message “Start process”. Do not trust such a link. Instead, access your online banking in the usual way. You will find that everything works as always.
Pay attention to the web address marked in the image. This is not the real BAWAG website!
If you don't notice the fraudulent website and don't leave the website, they claim that the first step you need to take is to scan a QR code to download the app. You should then accept an installation from unknown sources in your smartphone settings.
ATTENTION: At this point it should be clear that this is a scam. Your bank will never ask you to install apps from unknown sources. If you do this, malware will end up on your device and criminals will get your money and/or data.
What protects against phishing?
You should always be particularly skeptical of emails about sensitive topics such as your online banking, social media accounts and the like. Pay attention to sender addresses, the address, errors in spelling or address and check alternatively whether the information in the messages is actually true.
This is the best way to protect yourself from phishing attempts!
Have you entered data and installed the app?
If you just opened the email, there's no need to worry. However, if you have entered personal data on the fraudulent website or installed the dubious app, then urgent action is required. Contact your bank immediately and discuss how to proceed. It is probably necessary to block your account or at least update your login data. In addition, you must remove the malware from your smartphone. This usually requires a reset to factory settings. Please note that all data will be lost.
If you have already suffered damage and the criminals have stolen money from you, then we advise you to report it to the police.
Bawag itself writes on this topic:
Third parties use “phishing” to try to gain possession of a person’s account and login data. The sender of a phishing email pretends to be someone else and uses various pretexts to persuade the recipient to disclose confidential data. These pretexts could e.g. Examples include “Your account has been blocked” or “Security software/app installation required”. The goal is to get the recipient to reveal their personal information.
You can prevent phishing with these simple steps:
● To avoid attempted fraud from the outset, you should only use your eBanking on trustworthy devices and networks - but not on public devices, for example.
● Always pay attention to the sender of the emails, especially if they do not seem secure to you. Spelling errors or incorrect logos are often hidden in the fake emails.
● For a generally higher level of phishing protection, it is still advisable to set up separate access to the device for each user, which is protected by a strong password.
● Also make sure that you always have the latest (security) updates for your operating system and browser installed on your computer or smartphone. It is advisable to activate automatic updates to ensure that the system and applications are always up to date.
● It is also important to keep security features on smartphones and computers turned on, as disabling such features can lead to security vulnerabilities, increasing the risk of data misuse, such as through phishing emails or fraudulent websites.
