The police are warning of a new type of telephone fraud scam: unknown callers pretend to be employees of a local bank.
Under the pretext of having sent or wanting to send a new bank card, the victims are asked to carry out a “data comparison” over the phone. The callers ask for sensitive information such as name, date of birth or card number and pretend to be a bank employee.
Using such information, fraudsters can then trigger fake transfers from the accounts of the victims.
Since such a case was recently reported in the Höxter district, the Höxter police you to always be careful on the phone as soon as an unknown caller answers. Attempts at fraud continue to occur regularly using well-known methods such as tricks, false police officers or promises of prizes. In principle, no information about personal data or valuables should be given over the telephone.

If in doubt, just hang up. This is certainly not rude, but can protect you from becoming a victim of a telephone scam. In the event of a fraudulent call, inform the police immediately via the emergency number 110.
Similar scam on the phone
In the last few weeks, in addition to fake bank employees, there have also been repeated calls from fake “police officers” . These callers draw attention to suspected burglars during phone calls. They ask about valuables, cash and the security systems in the house.
The callers are unsettled with flimsy allegations, so that they end up voluntarily giving valuables or cash to the fake police officers “for safekeeping”.
Whether bank or police:
The police or real bank employees never request information about amounts of money, valuables or existing security systems over the phone! Do not share any information about your financial circumstances over the phone and do not allow yourself to be put under pressure on the phone! Never hand over money or valuables to strangers and never leave them in specified locations!
