The “online banking” actions always follow a similar pattern and go something like this:

The victims are contacted by a fake employee from the bank that holds the account. The real phone number of the financial institution appears on the phone. The callers reported that criminals had made an unauthorized international transfer in online banking using the customer account.

This unauthorized transfer must of course now be canceled. Customers then receive a corresponding TAN order for confirmation in their PushTAN app. In reality, however, this is not a cancellation, but rather the release of the actual transfer to the foreign perpetrator account. In many cases, customers previously received another TAN order, the confirmation of which increased the limit for online transfers.

The police ask that under no circumstances do you reveal TAN numbers or similar data on the phone or confirm them in the relevant apps. Not even if the callers have banking details such as account numbers, names of bank advisors or personal customer details. Real bank employees do not ask customers over the phone to enter or confirm the corresponding transaction numbers.

Anyone who has fallen victim to the fraudsters should contact the bank and the police immediately and file a criminal complaint.
