This is what happened:

At around 10:00 a.m., a 45-year-old woman from Heiligenhaus was asked by a young woman with a clipboard in her hand in the parking lot of a hypermarket on Westfalenstrasse in Heiligenhaus for a monetary donation for the deaf. The lady suspected fraud and consequently informed the police. Before the officers arrived, the young woman fled in a vehicle with two other men. The officers were able to find the trio on the main street and stop them.

As part of the investigation, a 50-year-old woman from Velbert came forward and stated that she had also been approached by the group of people in front of the consumer market. Believing she was helping deaf people, she gave the trio 20 euros in cash.

A 40-year-old Heiligenhauser also stated that he had been asked for money in a similar manner in the parking lot of an adjacent shopping center on Höseler Strasse. However, since he had doubts about the authenticity of the trio's information, he denied making a donation.

The officers established the personal details of the suspects who lived in Herne. Both the 21-year-old and her 19- and 23-year-old male companions have already come to the attention of the criminal police for similar scams. They were taken to the Velbert police station.

In the trio's vehicle, the officers found a small amount of cash as well as the clipboard that had previously been used for the crime, which they confiscated. After the initial criminal investigation was completed, the suspects were released from custody.

Police note:

The police warn against the “clipboard scam” and make it clear: Even in comparable cases, these are usually tricksters who want to arouse pity with their actions in order to receive monetary donations.

The police appeal:

Don't fall for the scammers' scam. Not everything that appears worthy of support at first glance is actually serious. If you are approached by such a person, be suspicious and, if in doubt, call the police. Under no circumstances should you hand over cash or other valuables!
