Several hundred reports a month against eBay fraudsters are currently registered with the Berlin police alone.
The State Criminal Police Office warns of two common scams. The perpetrators often offer attractive goods at a noticeably low price. If the purchase is made, they insist on a transfer of the money. Later they disappear without sending the products to the buyer. Oliver Klau from the Berlin State Criminal Police Office confirmed an increase in advertisements to the rbb consumer magazine SUPER.MARKT and explained: “The number of unreported cases is many times higher.”
In another scam, the fraudsters pose as buyers themselves and ask the seller to send the product abroad. They demand proof of dispatch by post; only with a photo of the receipt would it supposedly be possible to transfer the purchase price from abroad to Germany. Anyone who agrees to this will wait in vain for their money and the goods cannot be recalled.

Both frauds are made possible by concealing identity. The eBay company refuses verification. eBay explained to the rbb consumer magazine SUPER.MARKT: “This fight against fraud is like a fight against windmills.” Press spokesman Pierre Du Bois sees little reason to hope that this could be completely eliminated at some point.
If you don't want to give eBay fraudsters a chance, you should insist on picking up the goods in person and paying on site. When paying, the police advise using payment service providers with buyer protection such as Paypal or direct debit. Only with these do buyers have the opportunity to get their money back.
Victims should definitely report each individual case. In this way, investigators and later politicians can see how high the crime rate is in the area of online trading.
