In the past few days there have been several cases of trade credit fraud or data spying. Sometimes orders were placed on Amazon, sometimes credit cards were charged or trips were booked.

The police are therefore issuing another warning! This accumulation may be related to the current wave of phishing ( like this one ). Perpetrators send emails and lure their victims to false websites. If the victims enter their access data there, they do not end up in their customer account. Instead, they give unknown fraudsters free access to their accounts.

The new warning comes specifically from the police in the Märkisches Kreis . From there you find out:

  • A woman from Hemer entered her credit card details on an alleged DHL site.
  • In Schalksmühle, cell phones and tablets were hacked.
  • A woman from Iserlohn discovered several unauthorized orders on Amazon.
  • A woman from Neuenrade noticed irregularities on her credit card account.

The police warn against opening the emails, which often look deceptively real. You especially shouldn't click on any links included. If you want to control your customer account, you should instead go directly to the page via your web browser - by hand entry.

If there are any irregularities, you should immediately contact the provider and the payment service provider, such as banks. Unauthorized bookings should be reported immediately. Regularly checking the statements is very useful.

In general, you should be careful with your data on the Internet and not tell everyone your date of birth and/or address or post public and “live” photos from your vacation.

How do I recognize a fake email?

  • Most of the time you will not be contacted personally. Scammers use phrases like “Dear Customer” or no salutation at all.
  • The pretext is unrealistic and the email is full of grammatical and spelling errors.
  • The return address is not the service address of the named company.
  • The login page link does not match the link of the correct page.
  • The links to data protection, general terms and conditions, legal notice, etc. do not work.
  • As a general rule, Amazon does not ask you to disclose personal information via email.
