Despite their robust skin, the peels of oranges, lemons, tangerines and other citrus fruits are susceptible to mold. Many conventional fruits are therefore treated with preservatives and waxes after harvest. In addition, chemical pesticides may be used on conventional fruit. This also applies to “untreated” fruits in the growth phase. It is only after harvesting that preservatives and waxes may not be used on the peel of “untreated” fruit.

Alternative: organic oranges

“The best alternative is organic citrus fruits. These are not treated with chemical pesticides, preservatives or waxes.”

Caroline Ludwig, nutrition expert at the Rhineland-Palatinate Consumer Center

If you want to use the peel of oranges or other citrus fruits for baking or cooking, you should choose organic quality.

The consumer advice center advises that it is best to wash conventional fruits under lukewarm water and rub them dry before peeling.

This will remove most of the residue. It is advisable to wash your hands after peeling so that any remaining treatment products do not end up on the pulp. You can find more information about the contamination of citrus fruits on the website of the Rhineland-Palatinate Consumer Center: HERE
