There is even a special day for this phenomenon. Every year on May 9th, these missing socks and their surviving partners are remembered. An energy expert from the Brandenburg Consumer Center reveals where the socks go and other useful tips on the subject of laundry.
When the washing machine eats socks
If a single sock goes missing, it often ends up in a sports bag or under the bed after a while. But if it remains permanently missing, the washing machine may be responsible. “This is not because the washing machine has an overwhelming hunger for individual socks, but simply because the socks get caught in the rubber seal between the door and the drum and are pulled into the interior of the washing machine,” explains energy expert Jahn. There they get caught in the heating coil and after a while they completely dissolve due to heat and friction. A laundry bag can help. This means that socks do not disappear without a trace during the washing process and your favorite socks remain as a pair.

Help, the washing machine stinks
Another common nuisance when washing is an unpleasant smell from inside the drum. Joshua Jahn advises: “It helps to run a wash cycle at at least 60 degrees once or twice a month. This removes any detergent residue and kills germs that inevitably accumulate in the machine and cause unpleasant smells.”
Another recommended measure is to leave the washing machine door open after use. Regularly cleaning the dispenser chamber and wiping the rubber seal on the drum dry also helps.
Wash energy-savingly
Energy saving detective Jahn knows that a lot of energy can be saved when using the washing machine. “20-40 degrees is completely sufficient for normally soiled laundry. This allows you to save a lot of electricity because most of the energy when washing is needed to heat up the water,” says the expert. In most cases, prewash and boil wash are not necessary. Energy can also be saved if the washing machine only runs when fully loaded. “However, it is important to avoid stuffing the drum, as this increases the risk that individual socks will be pulled into the interior of the machine. It is advisable to leave about a hand-width of space free,” explains Jahn.
