With the current extremely hot temperatures, dogs are of course also very thirsty. But be careful: dogs can actually drink too much water!
We received inquiries as to whether an article on the “ Vawidoo ” site might be a hoax or clickbait. But that is by no means the case!

The site reports completely correctly that dogs often consume too much water when playing in water. However, this disrupts their electrolyte balance and the kidneys can no longer filter out the excess water. The water accumulates in blood vessels and organs and can lead to cramps and unconsciousness, and in the worst case, even death.
veterinary practice 's website :
“The phenomenon is called hyperhydration or water intoxication.
The dogs become dizzy, may salivate a lot, vomit and appear barely responsive. This can lead to swelling of the brain (cerebral edema), which can ultimately lead to death.
If dogs drink water too much and too quickly, this disease can occur, so please always make sure that the dogs do not play and drink in the water constantly, but that there are enough breaks.
If you notice staggering and/or vomiting after a long bath, please contact the nearest veterinarian quickly.”
The Vawidoo gives another useful tip: salty biscuits and pretzel sticks !
The kidneys need salt to function, otherwise too little water is excreted in the urine. That's why it's advisable to give this to the dog every now and then as a snack in the form of salty biscuits or pretzel sticks and to watch him closely. At the first sign of dizziness, cramps, nausea or vomiting, you should consult the vet immediately, as the clinical picture within a few hours !
