A dangerous trend is making waves on Instagram. A blogger claims that she is currently avoiding drinking tap water and is covering her fluid needs almost exclusively by eating fruit and their juices.

What's behind it? The Instagram influencer Sophie Prana explained in a long text under a photo post that she had given up water for four months. According to the 35-year-old yoga teacher, tap water and bottled water in particular contain dangerous ingredients.

She has even cut tea out of her daily diet and only eats fruit juices and smoothies. She also practices so-called “dry fasting” and hot yoga without drinking water. Effective hydration of the cells is only possible with rich water such as fruit juice.

Is tap water dangerous?

First of all, it should be noted that the consumption of tap water is not possible in all countries without any problems.
However, according to the consumer advice center's website, tap water in Germany is of excellent quality across the board and is safe to drink. Tap water is also drinkable across the board in Austria.

If there are any doubts, numerous laboratories in both countries offer reliable testing of tap water. In most cases, the landlord is obliged to ensure that the apartment he rents is of edible quality.

It should also be noted at this point that there are cases in which pipes have not yet been replaced and therefore consumption is not completely safe. However, the landlord is obliged to inform about this in advance and, in the event of defective pipes, to replace them.

Drinking tap water is approximately a hundred times cheaper than water from other sources and is more environmentally friendly, as it eliminates the hassle of transporting bottled water.

Regarding the health concerns claimed above, it should be noted that there is no reputable medical study in Germany that even remotely supports the blogger's lifestyle.

On the contrary, nutritionists and doctors warn against the blogger's recommendation. Skipping water in everyday life can pose a health risk because the body cannot absorb enough fluids through fruit.

In addition, exactly the opposite of the blogger's claim is true. When consuming raw fruits and vegetables, the body has to work hard to separate the ingredients and filter out the necessary water. Smoothies and fruit juices contain a large amount of sugar in high quantities. Although this is not industrial sugar, even fructose is unhealthy for the body in high doses.

Even the highly praised watermelon contains sugar.
According to the recommendations of the health authorities, a healthy adult needs approx. 1 ml of water per 1 kcal, which amounts to approx. 2.5 liters with a daily requirement of 2,500 calories. If one liter of water requirement were replaced by a kilo of melon, the body would have to process an additional 20 sugar cubes, i.e. 20 grams (although 1 kg of melon does not contain 1 liter of water, so more would have to be eaten). According to WHO, sugar consumption should not exceed 50 grams per day. The consequence of a “waterless” diet would be a massive increase in sugar consumption.
The blogger's claim that consuming fruit alone is a healthier alternative to tap water is not true.

What about water from plastic bottles?

This claim is partly true, but definitely not in the spirit of the blog entry.
In fact, the long-term consumption of tap water from plastic bottles is ecological madness, as tap water in Germany and Austria is safe to drink and is sometimes of higher quality than mineral water sold in supermarkets.

It should also be borne in mind that plastic bottles (especially those made from soft plastic) can release microplastics into the water and these can be ingested by humans.
However, it has not yet been proven how people absorb this microplastic and whether it has any health effects.
However, humans are able to excrete microplastics. Nevertheless, microplastics have been proven to be harmful to the environment because they can ultimately end up in nature via our wastewater.
So there is only partial truth to the blogger's claim, although not in the sense of her proposed lifestyle, but rather as an isolated argument.

Therefore, drinking from the tap is preferable to drinking from plastic bottles.

In summary, it is astonishing how much attention the influencer's post has generated and that some obviously health-endangering tips have been accepted by numerous followers.

Hydration from tap water cannot be replaced by eating fruits and smoothies; on the contrary, this would place a massive burden on the body and cause serious health problems.

Consuming tap water is possible everywhere in Germany and Austria and is even strongly recommended by experts and doctors.
Only water from plastic bottles is affected by microplastics, although it should be noted at this point that it has not yet been scientifically proven that microplastics have a health effect on humans; However, its harmful effects on the environment are a fact.

At this point it can be confidently stated: The blogger's claims are untrue and extremely dangerous to health!
