It was only a matter of time, but the “What color is…” question actually resurfaces after years of obscurity!
And since this question is shared so wonderfully by the internet community, it obviously didn't take long before we started flooding in with questions:
"Mimikama, please tell us what color the shoe really is?"
But let's show you the picture first:

Pink & white or turquoise & gray?
On the Girlsmouth Facebook group, Nicole Coulthard posted this picture of the shoe with the caption: “What do you see girls? Please tell me you see pink and white." However, the members of the group were quite divided about the colors:

A familiar dilemma!
Surely many people still remember the dress, where the colors also drove users crazy: was it white/gold or blue/black ? Or the Adidas jacket: was it white/blue or brown/black ?
And here too we have the same phenomenon: different users see different colors. So we need to take a closer look!

What color is the shoe?
A quirk of digital photography is that colors sometimes appear different when an image is over- or under-exposed. If two colors in an image have a special contrast to each other, the brain compares the color areas with each other and uses them to define the respective colors.
However, some users' brains are not so easily tricked into seeing the correct colors, but most people are confused by this optical illusion. However, graphics programs are unconfusing, which is why we simply subjected the image to color correction:

The shoe is pink & white!
By the way, not only we say that, but also Nicole Coulthard herself in an interview with the website “ Metro ”.
Accordingly, her friend bought these shoes a few weeks ago and sent the picture to her mother. She replied that “blue suits her”. The confusion became even greater when her mother's friend told her that the shoes were pink, but now also saw the other color combination.
That's why she posted the picture in the Facebook group... and sparked a new color discussion after the dress and the Adidas jacket!

How does that work?
The phenomenon that comes into play when viewing is the so-called color constancy . This principle ensures that we perceive colors as always the same, always constant, regardless of the light in the environment. A lemon always appears yellow to us in sunlight, in the light of a light bulb and in the light of a neon tube (with only very small differences, which are not significant and we have no direct comparison).
Would you like a small example?
In the image below, we see squares A and B differently because the brain identifies A as dark and B as light due to the fact that it is a checkerboard pattern. Due to the shadow of the green cylinder, the fields have exactly the same shade of gray. But that wouldn't fit into the checkerboard pattern, which is why the brain corrects it and we perceive the fields as different so that the "rest of the world" is still correct. On the right side of the image we have hidden this “rest of the world”. Result: The brain no longer sees the need to adjust anything anywhere and we see the true color of the field.
Our brain makes this adjustment without us being aware of it, and usually it's not even noticeable . Strawberries are always red, lemons are always yellow and oranges are always orange. Although everyone perceives a slightly different red, yellow and orange, there is no dispute about the “true” color of the lemon. In any case, there has never been such a discussion about fruit online…
