First the “end – to – end – encryption” and now WhatsApp also wants to become email, at least according to Jan Koum’s idea.
Let's roughly summarize the WhatsApp events of the past 6 months: WA became free, introduced “end-to-end encryption” and supports the sending of PDF files. But that's not all, more file formats will soon be supported. This is intended to make the tool more attractive “ for employees in companies who want to exchange business files” . With this expansion of functions and the integration of secure “end-to-end encryption”, WhatsApp could become a secure alternative to email. It is seen as an advantage that a file cannot end up in the spam folder or even be “lost”.
Expansion for the web
In order to offer better integration into everyday company life, the functions of the web version will be expanded in the future. Koum did not say exactly what was planned. Since the web client currently only mirrors the content of the mobile version, it is to be expected that, among other things, file management will be integrated into the desktop version.
According to Koum, the indicated corporate functions have not yet been further developed. As soon as the work on the encryption is completed, this project will be pushed forward.
No Snapchat alternative – no VR – plans
Koum further explained that there was no interest in engaging with Snapchat in any way, even if Snapchat were to offer new functions by incorporating telephony and chat. You won't react hectically and burden WhatsApp with new extensions. A billion already use WhatsApp and yet there is no end in sight to the growth. Koum says Snapchat is so popular among young people because their parents can't handle it.
Nevertheless, there are ideas about either increasing the restrictions on the broadcast function or eliminating them completely, but a final decision has not yet been made. However, it can be safely assumed that WhatsApp will not be available on VR glasses or the iPad, it was designed for portable devices and no one would take their iPad to the cinema.
