WhatsApp is now considered one of the most used messenger services. This makes it all the more unpleasant for some users when their account is suddenly blocked without warning.

If the WhatsApp account is suddenly blocked without warning: This happens again and again, even more frequently in the last few weeks. User complaints are handled with a reference to a violation of Facebook's terms of use. Since this is formulated in very general terms, affected users were unable to explain how they got into this situation.

Now Yahoo Finance shed light on the matter. Facebook obviously reacts to certain chat names. There is the case of a group chat that was jokingly renamed “chld prn”. Here, WhatsApp's algorithm struck and found the suspicion of child pornography to be a valid reason to block the group in question. However, this block not only affects the group chat, but also all users in it. One of these users reported this on Reddit . Due to the publication of this case, other affected users are now reporting similar incidents. The background to these blocks seems to have been solved by WhatsApp.

The bitter pill: There is no possibility of objection. The only “escape” seems to be changing your own mobile phone number. Which in turn means that the previous chat history cannot be restored despite backup copies.

The question also arises as to how effective Facebook's filter systems actually are.

This makes it relatively easy for individual users to intentionally cripple the accounts of other users. Based on this incident, one must also question which signals Facebook uses to recognize whether there is a violation of the terms of use. End-to-end encryption optimizes the protection of individual users' privacy, but makes it more difficult for Facebook to specifically identify problematic content. The fact that one assumes that chats with unique names actually have unique content seems a bit naive and therefore surprising.
