WhatsApp, a long-established messenger, surprises us with something new: WhatsApp channels. A feature that could not only revolutionize the way we share and consume news, but also open new doors for individuals, businesses and organizations.

But what exactly are these channels, how do they work and what does that mean for users? You can find out here.

WhatsApp channels

Back in July, the Meta subsidiary WhatsApp announced that it would expand its messaging service to include “channels”. The idea behind it? A feature that allows both private individuals and large organizations to share text, images, videos and much more. And although it was initially only tested in Colombia and Singapore, it is now available in 150 countries.

Data protection first

One of WhatsApp's main concerns has always been privacy. This is also an important point with the new function. Users can browse a special directory and find the channels that interest them. But the highlight? No one can see which channels you follow and personal information such as profile pictures and phone numbers remain hidden.

Storage and control of messages

An interesting feature is the handling of news. Content shared by channel operators remains stored on WhatsApp servers for up to 30 days, but can be deleted earlier if desired. And for those who want to maintain control over their content: screenshots and forwarding of messages from a channel can be blocked.

Interaction and further development

In addition to sharing content, the channels also offer interactivity. Users can react to messages with emojis, and although the overall reactions are visible, a user's individual reaction remains hidden. And that is just the beginning. WhatsApp plans to continually develop and improve this feature based on user feedback.

How do you start your own channel?

While it is currently only possible for select users to create their own channel, WhatsApp promises that this will be possible for everyone in the coming months. And for those who want to be informed about updates directly from WhatsApp, there is now also an official WhatsApp channel.

Conclusion

The WhatsApp channels represent an exciting and potentially transformative step in the development of messengers. WhatsApp is positioning itself not just as a messenger, but as a platform for content providers and organizations.

The feature is currently being rolled out gradually. If you haven't seen it yet, it probably won't be long.

It remains to be seen how this feature will develop in the coming months, but one thing is certain: there are exciting times ahead for all WhatsApp users worldwide.
