The WhatsApp data leak!

Almost all German media reported on the alleged WhatsApp data leak over the weekend! The data of 6 million German WhatsApp users, including their cell phone numbers, are currently being offered for sale in relevant forums for EUR 2,000.

The only problem: There is no WhatsApp data leak! Attorney Christian Solmecke from WBS.LEGAL explains.

We contacted the alleged hacker via a forum and he provided us with a sample of hundreds of data records from the alleged WhatsApp data leak. The amazing thing: The names and even their order are completely identical to those from the already known Facebook data leak from April 2021 - only names are occasionally missing.

Apparently pranksters or twisted fraudsters downloaded the Facebook data leak from the Darknet, shortened it and offered it nicely packaged as a new “WhatsApp data leak”.

“It makes sense to conclude that a WhatsApp data leak simply does not exist and that the massive reporting from the weekend is a gigantic newspaper canard,” says lawyer Christian Solmecke from the Cologne media law firm WBS.LEGAL.

What does exist, however, is the Facebook data leak

This was shown not least by the fine of EUR 265 million imposed on the Meta Group yesterday by the Irish data protection authorities. Meta did not handle its customers' data carefully and could have prevented the leak.

  • “This is exactly what we are accusing the Meta Group of in the over 3,000 lawsuits that we have filed against Meta on behalf of our 10,000 clients. Three courts have already awarded our clients damages of EUR 1,000. We are confident that other regional courts will follow,” said lawyer Solmecke.
