“XY added you to a group” – all well and good. But what if the chat messages get out of hand?

Who doesn't know it: You are added to a WhatsApp group. Various birthday parties, barbecues, other events but also study groups, work colleagues, etc. – these are all occasions where some people feel compelled to create a WhatsApp group because it “makes coordination with each other much easier”.

Group chats definitely have their place and often work really well. But many group members also quickly become annoyed by too frequent messages. The first step: mute the group. If that's not enough and you leave the group, you'll be happy to be added back again. Mostly without asking.

How do you protect yourself from unwanted group invitations?

The data protection settings in WhatsApp can help:
Open WhatsApp and select “Settings”.
Under “Account” you will find the sub-item “Groups” under “Data protection”. Here you can specify who can add you to groups in the future.

However, this setting can only be made in the app and not in the desktop version of WhatsApp Web.

Feature against WhatsApp group invitations

This feature is now gradually being made available to all users who already use iOS version 2.19.110.20 or Android beta version 2.19.298. As soon as the app has been updated, the settings will appear under the “Data protection” menu item. If this does not yet appear on the smartphone, the version must be updated.
