Data collectors always lure people with attractive prizes. Like the iPhone 11 Pro, for example.

Competition leads to data collectors – the most important thing to start with:

  1. Affiliate partners or data collectors attract data collectors with possible profits.
  2. This creates the impression that the prize has actually been won.
  3. The purpose of the competition is to obtain advertising consent from various sponsors and to collect personal data.

Competitions are a popular form of leads or affiliate programs to lure users and ultimately collect personal data and obtain advertising consent.

Lead generation is about attracting prospects. The competition only serves as bait, because the supposed raffle date is often far in the future and the participant is supposed to make their data available to a list of sponsors - whether the promised prize will actually be awarded at the end is questionable. Such competitions have been available on Facebook for years. However, as in this case, they are also often sent via WhatsApp.

The method consists of 3 steps: the bait, the bridge, the conclusion:

The bait:

The bait is sent via WhatsApp and pretends that the recipient can only capture a winning package for a short period of time. Under “Participate now” you can see the URL apple.com, which gives the user the impression that Apple is organizing the competition.

In truth, Apple or other well-known companies have nothing to do with such competitions. The name only serves as a lure and to increase trust in the competition.

But if you tap on the link, you will go somewhere completely different than Apple: namely to a page that calls itself “bonus bucket”, but is apparently giving away an iPhone 11 Pro.

The bridge:

To win, the user must answer three questions. Apparently there are still 37 smartphones up for grabs - this information increases the pressure to take part quickly.

Once you have finished the question round, you will receive three ticks - you are qualified to win an iPhone! Always , because it doesn't matter what answers you choose. At the end you always reach a data input mask.

To increase the pressure even further, there are now only 36 iPhones up for grabs. Comments generated by supposed users who have already won are intended to support the character of a real competition.

It is also clear here: You only have the opportunity to win one, which expires in 270 seconds if you do not quickly share the competition with your contacts via WhatsApp. Through this step, which a friend of yours completed, you too were able to enjoy the bait.

The conclusion:

So once you have delighted your friends with this bait competition, bonus-bucket will tell you the last step: entering your personal data.

In the end, the competition organizer only wants our data. Why?

If you have the chance to win, you not only have to make your data available to the organizer, but also to a number of different sponsors.

They may inform the participant – i.e. you – about offers from their respective business area during registration. And by informing we mean a veritable flood of advertising via email, telephone, push messages and/or post .

We have seen this method many times before - even with other prospects of profit as a lure. We kept noticing the same companies that organize such competitions. For example Naturvel PTE. LTO, adpublisher, red lemon media GmbH, Lead Spot Media, Proleagion, Spar Advisor Ltd., Planet49, Green Flamingo and others.
