I've had a group with myself on WhatsApp for a long time. When I tell someone about it, they usually look askance at me. But the benefits of this group are clear. If I just want to quickly note something down, keep a link for myself without wanting to put it in the bookmarks or just want to quickly copy screenshots, photos or something similar without saving them directly, then this group with myself on WhatsApp is perfect for that . Sometimes this can also be used as a shopping list.

This corresponds to a memo function that is also known from other messenger services such as Signal, Telegram or Slack. Of course I could also use the memo app, which is probably available on every smartphone. But WhatsApp is simply quicker at hand.

How does WhatsApp’s “Message Yourself” work?

In and of itself, this is not a new function; in previous versions of WhatsApp for iOS it was already possible to find your own phone number in the contact list and therefore also use it for WhatsApp chats. However, the feature did not work with several devices, so it has now been removed for a few months.

Now the entry point required for this has been restored and the function returns for iOS. However, this is news for Android, as WABetaInfo reports.

Chat as a notebook or memo function

This chat with yourself works like any other chat. You can see a difference in the labeling. Here you can read “Message yourself” or “Send yourself a message.”

This chat can now be used as a kind of location-independent notebook. It is also practical that these chats and the messages in them are synchronized on all linked devices. For example, you can also transfer media or notes from one device to another.

Tip: Pin the chat at the top and you'll always have your notes quickly at hand.

“Message Yourself” is already available to some users. This function will be fully rolled out in the coming days.
