What has been speculated about for a few days has now been confirmed by WhatsApp!

WhatsApp is raising the minimum age for users from 13 to 16 years.

WhatsApp published its new terms of use on the evening of April 24, 2018.

These say, among

Age. If you live in a country in the European Region, you must be at least 16 years old to use our Services or such greater age required in your country to register for or use our Services

In other words: In the following countries, WhatsApp is only permitted from the age of 16:

Andorra, Austria, Azores, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canary Islands, Channel Islands, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, French Guiana, Germany, Greece, Guadeloupe, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Madeira, Malta, Martinique, Mayotte, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Réunion, Romania, San Marino, Saint Barthélemy, Saint-Martin, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United Kingdom sovereign bases in Cyprus (Akrotiri and Dhekeli), and Vatican City.

However, outside Europe the minimum age remains at 13 years.

The reason for raising the minimum age is the EU General Data Protection Regulation

However, WhatsApp itself will probably not check this on a large scale, for example by uploading an ID card or similar documents. Users themselves, it is assumed, will soon simply be asked via the app whether they have already reached the age of 16 !
