But now Android beta testers from WhatsApp report that they can no longer take screenshots of these one-time images and videos in the current version 2.22.22.3.
The screenshot lock on WhatsApp could be coming
Judging by the beta testers' statements, the messenger is currently testing a new feature that other messengers such as Telegram have long included: blocking screenshots when viewing images and videos once.
As t-online reports, when the beta testers tried to take a screenshot they later only saw a black image in their gallery. Even if you try to use third-party extensions, this is more possible. Attempting a screen capture, i.e. recording the cell phone screen while opening a picture or video, is also blocked by default.
What users should know
So far, when sending pictures and videos, every user can choose to have the message disappear after the recipient has viewed it for the first time. However, WhatsApp points out that screenshots could possibly be taken before deletion.
This option has often been criticized because it largely defeats the purpose of the function of only being able to view images on the device for a short moment. That's why the messenger is currently testing the new blockade; The following functions come into effect for beta testers:
- Just like before, if the recipient tries to take a screenshot, this will not be communicated to the sender of the message.
- Nevertheless, WhatsApp blocks the attempt immediately, as does a screen recording. The captured image appears black in the gallery.
- It is no longer possible to forward, export or save the so-called view-once messages.
- Screenshots of conversations and chat histories can still be taken, even if they include some disappearing messages, because the new feature is only limited to blocking screenshots of images and videos.
You still need to be careful when sharing pictures and videos!
Although the messenger service continues to work on improving the detection of silent screenshot attempts, it is not yet clear when this block will be available to all users. Although it is unlikely, it could theoretically happen that Messenger does not roll out the new function for all users.
Furthermore, it should be borne in mind that it cannot be completely ruled out that someone still has the opportunity to record one-time messages via a detour. All you need is a second mobile device with which you can easily take a photo of your smartphone and then easily save the photo permanently. So it's still important to be careful when sending messages of any kind.
