New WhatsApp terms of use prohibit sending newsletters via WhatsApp from December 7th.
In the future, WhatsApp will consider the mass sending of push messages as abuse.
If this rule is violated, you may be kicked out of WhatsApp and face legal consequences. For “average consumers” who use Messenger to send personal messages, this innovation doesn’t change much.
WhatsApp cites the fight against “fake news” as its justification
With the new regulation, WhatsApp wants to specifically combat the mass spread of fake news and spam. WhatsApp is also responding to problems and complaints that have arisen in the past in Brazil and India. Here, the messenger was used during the election campaign to stir up sentiment against political opponents.

The number of possible recipients for forwarded messages has already been limited. But WhatsApp is generally under great pressure to take precautions against misuse of the app.
Bitter pill for companies
For companies that have previously been able to achieve enormous reach with their WhatsApp newsletters, this means the loss of an important point of contact with their customers. Services like “Messenger People”, a platform that allows you to automatically send WhatsApp messages to thousands of recipients, will also have to rethink and adapt their business model due to the new terms of use. WhatsApp has a transition period for providers and users of such platforms.

Business solution for companies using an API interface
A separate API interface has been offered for about a year now, which can be used by verified and trustworthy partners. However, companies cannot send push messages here, but rely on the user to contact the respective company on their own initiative.
