The police have recently been warning more and more about the variety of stories that fraudsters come up with to get their victims' money. “Grandchildren’s trick”, “fake police officer” and “emergency situation” are just a few keywords that citizens should pay attention to. The damage amounts are sometimes enormous.
In recent weeks, perpetrators have been increasingly asking for amounts in the low four-digit range in order not to attract immediate attention. The scam is currently almost always the same: the perpetrator writes to his victim with a cell phone number and pretends to be a close relative; often the son or daughter. During the conversation, the fraudster says that the “old number”, i.e. the real one, can now be deleted. If the victim responds thoughtlessly, this will later give him the illusion of writing to the real relative. A few hours later, under the pretense of a story, there is a demand for money.

This also happened to a 66-year-old in Vorhalle yesterday, August 16, 2022. The supposed son demanded money because he allegedly couldn't access his bank account. The woman from Hagen saw through the fraud in time and informed her (real) son. The Hagen police are now publishing images of the chat process that investigators photographed from the 66-year-old's cell phone. The Hagen police hope that this will make it clear how the crooks operate and how easy it is to fall into the trap without thinking. In particular, inform older people about the scammers' nasty scam.
