As if this now well-known scam wasn't already bold enough, the scammers went one better. The victims' feelings are already being played with, as emergency situations are usually set up by people close to them in order to get money. Because they are concerned about relatives or because the victims are willing to help, scammers are always successful with this scam. However, a case has now become known in which violence was even threatened.
It started like most cases
On May 17th, a 62-year-old woman from Waren (Müritz) received a WhatsApp message in which an unknown person pretended to be the woman's son.
Initially the fraud followed the already known scam.
The old cell phone is broken and this is now the new number that can be saved straight away. Financial problems were raised during the chat. The alleged son could not make urgent transfers because of the new cell phone. The German made two transfers totaling EUR 4,700 for her alleged son.
But this was obviously not enough.
Further demands for money were made. However, the 62-year-old became suspicious because there were increasing spelling errors in the chat and the address was changed to Sie. She repeatedly asked her “son” to call her and asked several times who she would actually write to.
Here the fraudsters changed their trick. It is the first time that such a case has become known.
Threat of violence
The demands took a previously unknown turn. The criminals pretended that the 62-year-old's son was in their power. If she wanted to see him again, she should transfer more money. They would beat him if she didn't immediately make the required transfers and send photo evidence of them.
The 62-year-old then went to the police and filed a report. By informing the bank immediately, the money that had already been transferred could be retrieved.
