To back up a chat on WhatsApp, you could create a backup or export the chat. This function has now been switched off for German users.
Normally, WhatsApp is constantly being developed and new features are added to the messenger app. But now a function is no longer available. WhatsApp provider Facebook has now switched off backups or exports of chats for users in Germany, as Golem.de reports.
Can you still back up your chats?
Under “More functions” – “Export chat” you could previously save up to 40,000 messages externally. However, this option is now missing in the latest versions for Android and iOS.

According to Golem.de, this option cannot be found in iOS version 2.19.124. An Android device (version 2.19.368) from the t-online.de editorial team, which takes part in the WhatsApp beta program, also lacks this feature. With devices with version 2.19.360 you can still export chats.
WhatsApp issues the following message on its website: “Please note that the function is not supported in Germany.”
However, the backup via BackUp still works. To do this, select “Settings” – “Chats” – “Chat Backup” – “Backup” .
Is the background to the shutdown a patent dispute?
At the beginning of December, the Munich regional court decided that WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram could no longer be offered in their current form because parts of the software violated patents held by Blackberry.
At the time, Facebook stated that it would adapt its apps accordingly. Golem.de suspects that the chat export function may have been deactivated for this reason.
Several patent lawsuits against Facebook
The Munich proceedings are reminiscent of the patent dispute between Blackberry and Facebook in the USA. In spring 2018, Blackberry accused Facebook of infringing seven patents. For example, displaying an app icon with a counter for the number of unread messages.

Blackberry itself no longer develops devices and was strongly represented in the early days of the smartphone market. Blackberry now develops software solutions with companies and therefore has numerous patents. The photo app Snapchat has also already been sued by Blackberry. Whether you want to improve your cash balance in this way remains to be seen.
