Issuing one's mobile number on WhatsApp has long been an unavoidable and often controversial matter. However, this privacy dilemma appears to be coming to an end soon as WhatsApp reveals plans to make presenting users' mobile numbers optional in the future.

The blog WaBetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is working on an option where users can create a unique username when creating an account. This significant change would allow users to hide their cell phone number through profile settings and be identified by their usernames instead.

Previously, users could only edit their name and status in their profile settings, while their phone numbers were visible. With the upcoming change, WhatsApp could take a decisive step towards improved user privacy and data security.

Username instead of cell phone number

WaBetaInfo has published a screenshot showing that the mobile number field can be left blank when setting up a user account.

This could be interpreted as a response to long-standing criticism, as disclosing mobile phone numbers was previously an essential requirement for using WhatsApp. This is in contrast to some other messaging services such as Telegram and Threema, which do not require you to provide a phone number.

However, it remains unclear whether a cell phone number will still be required for initial registration

Apps like Threema work without providing a phone number, but most other instant messaging services still require one.

With this change, WhatsApp may position itself as even more competitive in the highly competitive messaging services space by offering its users more control over their personal data. It remains to be seen how and when these changes will be implemented and what impact they will have on the user experience.
