Crizpy: Let's put social media where it's most fun.

In order for a fire to even start, it needs fuel, heat and oxygen. In order to extinguish a fire, you must eliminate at least one of these factors. However, not every fire can be fought with the same extinguishing agents and methods.

In order to be able to extinguish fires safely and effectively, the EU has divided all combustible materials into five fire classes. Because not all fires are the same and with the wrong extinguishing agent, a fire can become even worse or explode.

Solid material fires fall under fire class A. Solid materials include wood, coal, paper, straw and fiber materials. To extinguish fires, you can use water extinguishers, foam extinguishers or a powder extinguisher with ember powder.

Fire class B affects liquids such as gasoline, alcohol, tar, wax, varnish or resin. Fire extinguishers are extinguished using a foam extinguisher, carbon dioxide extinguisher, powder extinguisher with special powder or ember powder.

Fire class C deals with gas fires – natural gas, hydrogen, methane, propane or butane. Gas fires are fought with powder extinguishers with ember powder or special powder.

Fire class D includes metal fires. If metals such as aluminum, magnesium, sodium, lithium and their alloys are burning, the fire can be brought under control with metal powder extinguishers or very dry sand.

Grease and oil fires fall under fire class F. These include oils and fats such as vegetable or animal cooking fats and oils. Here the oxygen must be removed by covering it with a fire blanket. Otherwise, only the fire department can help with special extinguishing agents and methods.
