Crizpy: Let's put social media where it's most fun.

A positive attitude has many advantages. It makes us more open-minded, more confident and more flexible. Those who are pessimistic often make life unnecessarily difficult for themselves. But a bad mood is better than your reputation.

Psychologist Joseph Paul Forgas discovered that we can actually benefit from our grumpiness. For his study, Forgas tested the effects of sadness. The result: People in a negative mood think more analytically and are more likely to convince others of their opinion. A bad mood helps you find your way out of an unsatisfactory situation. This also makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. Those who critically evaluate situations adapt better to the environmental conditions.

Scientists at the University of California at Berkeley also found that a bad mood actually has a positive effect on our health in the long term. In a study of 1,300 subjects, those who accepted their low moods were happier than those who refused to admit their negative feelings. So if you suppress bad emotions, you accumulate negative feelings, and that leads to even more resentment in the long term.

Conclusion: If you're in a bad mood, you can be grumpy sometimes. The bad mood usually goes away on its own and can help us become happier.
