Currently, we already covered the topic in 2016 , various articles are doing the rounds online that report that hanging your laundry up in your apartment can be fatal! Claudia, the agile maiden from the Mimikama team, has taken on the topic again.

The washing machine beeps: laundry ready. So, hang it up.

And in the apartment, because not everyone has a garden, not everyone has a tumble dryer. For some people, the balcony they may have is too small, or it's raining or too cold outside. But then you read a headline: “Deadly danger! Why you shouldn't dry your laundry indoors"

Deadly danger?

That sounds a bit lurid. But what is behind the statement? How dangerous can it be if I hang laundry out to dry in my apartment? And what should I do if I have no other option?

Keyword: humidity

If we take a full load of laundry out of the washing machine, there will be around two liters of water in it. If we let the laundry dry in the apartment, this moisture will settle into the air in the room.

This causes the humidity in the apartment to rise by around 30 percent. And we all know what happens when an apartment is too damp or too wet: mold can develop.

As is well known, mold is a fungus whose spores are poisonous. Inhaling these spores can cause respiratory problems, allergies or even asthma.

Aside from the health consequences, it can also be expensive if mold has to be removed from your home.

Dry laundry in the apartment

To prevent it from getting that far, there are a few tips. If you take these into account, you won't have to worry about damaging your health or risking having to renovate your home.

  • Ventilate regularly
However, it is not enough to tilt a window somewhere in the apartment. Shock ventilation makes more sense here: open the windows or doors completely every now and then for ten minutes. It also makes sense to have a draft between open doors and windows.
  • High spin speed
Depending on the type of laundry, it makes sense to choose the highest possible spin speed. The laundry comes out of the washing machine less wet and therefore releases less moisture into the air.
  • Suitable room
A room in which there is at least one or (even better) several windows is best. The bathroom is also suitable for this as it is designed to withstand moisture. Here, however, the drying time is a little longer because the humidity is generally higher due to showering, etc. Bathrooms often don't have windows, but they do have ventilation. It is advisable to remove the cover from time to time in order to clean the ventilation itself and replace existing filters.
  • Hang laundry wisely
If you leave a little more space between the different items of clothing, the air can circulate better. The use of clothes hangers can also be useful here. The laundry also dries much faster.
  • Measuring humidity
If you want to know exactly, you can measure the humidity in the apartment before and after hanging up laundry. Hygrometers are available for around 15 euros.
  • Information from the landlord
It always makes sense to ask the landlord. Apart from the fact that it is also of interest to him that an apartment is not kept “too wet”, he may have good tips or, at best, even an empty room that could be used as a drying room.

If these tips are not so easy to implement due to the circumstances, you can always use a dehumidifier.

Conclusion

So we are far from a “mortal danger” due to drying clothes in our own four walls. Nevertheless, it is important to avoid excessive humidity within the living space in order to avoid the risk of mold growth.
