Microsoft is considering some alternatives to the well-known password

As Futurezone presented alternatives to using passwords in Windows in a recent blog entry

The words of Microsoft manager Karanbir Singh reveal that the company wants to make it possible for users to never have to enter a traditional password again:

“Nobody likes passwords. They are uncomfortable, unsafe and expensive. In fact, we hate them so much that we are working hard to create a world without them. A world without passwords"

Instead, multi-factor authentication is used.

Biometrics in combination with the smartphone

Biometric technology such as fingerprint or facial recognition was already used in Microsoft’s “Windows Hello” service. Access to a device specifically assigned to the user also plays a role.

Here you can see how the computer can only be unlocked with the help of biometric recognition and the smartphone. For example, if the user and smartphone move away, the computer screen is automatically locked.

App instead of password

Another option is to use Microsoft's authentication app. This app can be connected to the Windows account. If you now want to unlock your laptop or computer, you can do this via the app using fingerprint or Face ID.

According to Microsoft, this type of “password” provides a better level of security than traditional passwords. The attacker first has to get his hands on the smartphone, which, however, is useless for the perpetrator due to the biometric security.

According to the manager, Windows 10 can be used in so-called S mode from the April 2018 update. As a cloud user, you can now use your Windows PC without having to type in a password first.

For the future, Microsoft is also planning a log-in using a security key. This key works using a USB or NFC stick and additional biometric security or a PIN. In the future, this will offer companies the opportunity to log in using a USB stick and fingerprint or a similar solution with smartphone support without ever entering a user name or password.
