The claim
According to a sharepic, the historian Heinrich August Winkler is said to have attributed “moral megalomania” to the Greens.
Our conclusion
There is no evidence for the alleged quote. The most likely origin is a talk show in which the host gave the quote to the historian.
The historian Heinrich August Winkler is said to have attributed “moral megalomania” to the Greens. This is proven by a sharepic on Facebook in which the sentence “The Greens suffer from moral megalomania” is shown under a photo of the historian.
According to the post on Facebook, he is said to have uttered the quote on August 23, 2018. However, there is no evidence to support Winkler's statement above.

The German Press Agency (dpa) reports that Winkler responded to their request with a clear answer: "I rule out the possibility that at some point I should have said in general terms: The Greens suffer from moral megalomania."
Looking for quotes
About a month before the alleged quote was made, namely on July 29, 2018, the historian mentioned in an interview with “Welt” that one could hear from the ranks of the Greens in the Bundestag that “we Germans are now the world champions of charity and willingness to help.” Here he was referring to a view by Green Party politician Katrin Göring-Eckardt, who described the Germans on September 9, 2015 , during a Bundestag debate. However, this is also not proof of the quote from historian Winkler that can be found on the sharepic.
However, the latter warned once, namely on October 4th, 2017, about the “new German megalomania”, which could speak for the Facebook post. Because of its history, Germany is not suitable to be Europe's moral leading nation, said Winkler. In the NZZ interview in which Winkler made this statement, there is no reference to the “The Greens” party.
Source of the Winkler quote was a false claim on a talk show
After further investigation, the dpa came to the conclusion that the false quote from historian Winkler originated on August 22, 2018 in the talk show “Markus Lanz”. The moderator falsely claimed that Winkler had made comments about the party as mentioned above. Just one day later, in an article on the “Huffpost” portal, which reported on the broadcast, one could read about a “quote from the German historian Heinrich August Winkler”. Most likely, this statement brought Winkler's incorrect quote into circulation, so that it was found in a sharepic on Facebook that same day.
