The pain of being a fact checker: you even habitually analyze funny sharepics!

That sharepic has been circulating for years: the garbage bag with spicy contents!

What is the Coke bottle doing in the garbage bag?
What is the Coke bottle doing in the garbage bag?

While every other user is laughing, we as fact checkers don't see the obvious, but rather other details: the writing on the garbage bag!

Verboden?

On the yellow garbage bag with black writing you can see words like “Verboden”, “Verpakkingen” and “Geen plastic”.
This is an obvious indication that the picture may not have been taken in Germany at all, but perhaps in the Netherlands!

Netherlands and Cola

After interviewing a few women who are familiar with this sort of thing, we were able to determine that the size of the Coke bottle is 0.5 liters compared to the ominous object next to it, which is apparently well known to many women. So we at least know the capacity of the bottle, but not exactly where the garbage bag was.

A trip next door

No, not to the neighbor to ask her! It could be that someone from the Netherlands moved to Germany and took their garbage bags with them, but another detail points to a completely different country: namely the manufacturer's logo!

The company IVAGO , whose logo can be seen on the garbage bag, is based in Belgium. And another special feature: the company is exclusively responsible for garbage bags in the city of Ghent and the surrounding area.

So we now have the exact location, but when is the photo from?

Time travel

Here too we can see that the photo is not current. In June 2014, the IVAGO company changed the design of its garbage bags: Since then, the yellow bags have had red writing, not black writing. This way you can specify that the image must have been taken before June 2014.

But the deposit?!

You don't have to worry about that either, because there was no bottle deposit in Belgium at the time! Bottle and can deposits have only discussed since 2018 .

Conclusion

The picture was taken before June 2014 in the Belgian city of Ghent or the surrounding area. In Belgium the main languages spoken are Dutch and French, so the Dutch text on the garbage bag is not unusual.

You don't have to worry about the deposit either, as then as now there was no deposit on bottles and cans in Belgium.

However, as for the other item in the trash bag…. We're hopelessly stumped, we don't know what to do with it!
