Romance Scam or Love Scam – This is the name of a scam on Facebook. Women are contacted by attractive men and cheated out of their money by feigning love.
The Neubrandenburg police report on a current case of “love scam”:
On November 4th, 2019, a criminal complaint for fraud was filed with the police in Neubrandenburg because a 58-year-old lady became the victim of a love scam, the so-called “love scamming”. The 58-year-old reported that about a year ago she met a man on Facebook who said he worked for a telecommunications company in Kabul. During the getting-to-know-you phase, the man is said to have sent a package for the 58-year-old, which probably contained 100,000 euros in cash. A little later, the 58-year-old was contacted by phone by a supposed employee of a courier company saying that she had to transfer 1,300 euros so that the package could reach her. She also made this transfer. In the following months, the 58-year-old made further transfers at the request of the courier company, with the intention that this was the only way the package could be delivered to her. The injured party transferred a total of 8,700 euros to the alleged courier company. During the last payment of 1,500 euros a few days ago, the employees of her financial institution became aware and spoke to the 58-year-old. This made her suspicious and filed a criminal complaint about the fraud.
The employees of the Neubrandenburg Criminal Police Office have started the investigation.

What is “Love Scamming” or “Romance Scamming”?
“Love Scamming” is like a kind of love scam in the digital world. We assume that there is a high number of unreported cases because many victims do not report it to the police out of shame and do not talk about it to anyone in their social circle.
With “love scamming” or “romance scamming”, the victim is led to believe that a romantic relationship has developed or existed through frequent messaging (SMS, WhatsApp, email). The victim sometimes becomes emotionally dependent on the perpetrator, even though there is never direct contact. Promises are made that are never kept. Due to the emotional dependency that has built up, the victim falls for the perpetrator and does everything in order not to lose his favor. The victim often transfers several amounts of money to the perpetrator over a longer period of time.
“Love scamming” is still a taboo topic in today’s society. As with the topic of “grandchild tricks”, it is important to talk about it and to have a lively exchange, because this is the only way to remain attentive and be warned in good time.
