Photos are repeatedly posted on Facebook in which the hope is for pity and a corresponding number of interactions.

Photos like this are not uncommon : A young woman sits in a wheelchair. There is a typical message for this. This reads: “Today is my birthday! My friends think no one will share this photo because I’m disabled!”

This message makes many people feel pity. You just can't imagine why no one wants to be a part of her birthday. People quickly feel inclined to share this photo and message.

And that's exactly what thousands of people do. They don't hesitate, they don't ask about the fate of the person pictured, they don't question whether what's written about the picture is true, who the young woman is and how the photo was taken:

At this point we start the fact check to see who is shown in the photo and to find out the true story behind the photo.

If you spend a little time with the photo and the image search, you will get a lot of results for this image. We see Mairead from Denver.

There is a long photo story about this photo itself on the blog Searchingforthelight ( see here ). The second person in this photo story is Lashaw, her boyfriend. She posed with him for the photo series in the article.

The author of the article describes Mairead as a “part time wheel chair user”, so according to her, she is not in a wheelchair all the time. Mairead, on the other hand, has an Instagram account called “ Chroniczebra ” on which she reports about her illnesses.

The clinical pictures she describes there are very extensive. According to her own information, she suffers from mast cell activation syndrome, which can cause Meng's symptoms. In the past, she has repeatedly published pictures of her various illnesses, which were not always received without controversy.

Conclusion

Apart from other accompanying stories, one can summarize: The picture is real, the story on Facebook about it is not. It wasn't her birthday that day, but was posing for a photo story with her boyfriend.
