The claim

“Women who live in women’s shelters are not entitled to the climate bonus. Women who live in women's shelters are usually victims of domestic violence by their life partners (husband, boyfriend, ...). Violent men who beat their wives/partners in women's shelters are rightly locked up.”

Our conclusion

Women who live in women's shelters usually also have a registration address in Austria. If they have been registered in Austria for at least 183 days, they will of course also receive the climate bonus regardless of whether they are registered in a women's shelter or still at home.

Since there are always various false claims regarding the climate bonus in Austria, we reported on it in detail just a few days ago ( HERE ).

Now another claim is making the rounds, which mentions, among other things, that women who live in women's shelters are not entitled to the climate bonus, but "violent men who beat their wives/partners into women's shelters are entitled to the climate bonus and were rightly locked up."

It is this claim (sic!) that is mostly making the rounds on WhatsApp, Telegram and Facebook:

“Women who live in women’s shelters are not entitled to the climate bonus. Women who live in women's shelters are usually victims of domestic violence by their life partners (husband, boyfriend, ...). Violent men who beat their wives/partners in women's shelters are rightly locked up. If you sit in port for 6 months, you are entitled to the climate bonus. You really have to let this sink in: women who have been beaten are not entitled to the climate bonus in Austria, but those who beat them are! I always used to think that it was useful to be a bit stupid before going into high politics. Since I became aware of this fact, I am convinced that it is necessary to have someone “on the hook” before accepting a mandate in the Austrian National Council!

Fact check:

This statement is not true. We have already written in our article “ Who will get the climate bonus now?” “clarified that the climate bonus goes to all people who have their main residence in Austria for at least six months (183 days) in the current calendar year. This applies to both adults and children, regardless of origin and citizenship.

We forwarded this claim to the cabinet of Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler and received the following information:

“Women who live in women’s shelters usually also have a registration address in Austria. If they have been registered in Austria for at least 183 days, they will of course also receive the climate bonus regardless of whether they are registered in a women's shelter or still at home.

If you are still registered at your old home address, you will also receive the climate bonus transferred or a letter delivered to you. The ex-partner cannot accept the climate bonus on her behalf.”

Cabinet of Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler

And to the statement in the claim: “If you sit in the ports for 6 months, you are entitled to the climate bonus.”

Yes, prison inmates are also entitled to benefits from the moment they meet the criterion of having their main residence in Austria for at least 183 days.
