The Social Day: Commitment that raises questions
The “Social Day” campaign, organized by Student Help Life (SHL), is a project that enables young people in Germany to stand up for their peers in Southeast Europe and Jordan and, more recently, in Ukraine. Nevertheless, there are critical voices who ask why German students should work and donate their wages to help people in countries like Ukraine, while there are people in Germany itself who suffer from poverty.
However, taking part in the social day does not exclude involvement in your own country. Many students and organizations in Germany are committed to social justice and the fight against poverty. The Social Day is a special project that provides targeted international aid and at the same time encourages young people in Germany to get involved socially. The criticism fails to recognize that social engagement can and should take place on different levels – local, national and international. Participating in the Social Day and supporting people in need in your own country are not opposites, but can and should go hand in hand.
A special day for students
One day a year is a day of variety for many school children in Germany - the social day. On this day, they leave their school books aside and swap their everyday school life for a day of work. But it's not just about work. It's about making a contribution and making the world a little better.
Note: The Social Day has been organized by Student Help Life since 1998 and is the largest student event of its kind in Germany. While the social day initially took place every two years, since 2006 it has been held annually and nationwide. This is a nationwide day of action on which students have the opportunity to swap their school desk for a job. They go to work on this day and donate their wages to social projects that are supported by “Schulen Helfen Leben”.
The organization behind the social day
The organization “Schulen Helfen Leben” (SHL) is the driving force behind this unique event. She coordinates the nationwide engagement campaign in which students enter the world of work for a day and donate their wages to projects that support their peers in Southeast Europe and Jordan and currently in Ukraine.
How the social day works
On social day, the students look for a job in their area - be it in a company, with the neighbors, in their favorite ice cream parlor or with their grandparents. The wages earned on this day will be donated to “Students Help Live” and will flow into international projects to support their peers.

Note: Participation in the social day is voluntary and students can take part if their school has decided to take part.
You must sign a work agreement, which serves as an excuse for school and as an official registration for the social day. See: The Social Day - regulations for schools and framework conditions for participation from 2012

Support for Ukraine
This year the social day has even greater significance. In addition to ongoing support for projects in Southeast Europe and Jordan, he will also contribute to helping people in Ukraine and people who have had to flee Ukraine Schools that have registered for Social Day 2022 will be regularly informed by SHL via email about the status of emergency aid in Ukraine.
Where the collected revenue goes
The proceeds from the social day flow into education and democracy projects for children and young people in countries such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jordan, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and now also in Ukraine. These projects are particularly aimed at young people who live in poverty or are affected by discrimination.
A day for democracy and against discrimination
The social day is more than a working day. It is an experience that encourages students to stand up for their rights and set an example for an open society. With their commitment, they show what power and influence young people can have on today's society. They set an example for solidarity and show what shared commitment can achieve.
A call to action
The Social Day is an excellent example of how schools can encourage their students to work for a fairer world, to actively engage in social justice and to take responsibility. It is an opportunity for students to get to know their strengths and weaknesses, strengthen their communication skills and initiative and gain valuable practical experience.
More social day options
The social day also offers schools a wide range of possible uses. It can be used as a gateway to political education by integrating the social and political contexts covered in the Social Day projects into lessons. It can also be used as an opportunity for younger students who are not yet ready to spend a day in the world of work by organizing group events such as a bake sale or a charity concert. In addition, students can use the social day to gain insights into various careers and thus support their career orientation with an additional career field exploration day. Many schools also use the social day as an integral part of lessons by integrating it into the “School without Racism, School with Courage” program.
A law that supports social commitment
In Germany, income from the social day is exempt from income tax . This means that students can donate the entire amount they earn that day tax-free to Student Help Life.
Conclusion: The Social Day is an impressive initiative that shows what is possible if we all work towards a fairer world. It is a day that gives students the opportunity to gain practical experience in the world of work, get involved socially and show solidarity. And perhaps most importantly, it is a day that shows students that they have the power to change the world.
