The topic is relevant for all users of digital devices. Whether it's pickpocketed or lost due to carelessness: If your smartphone is suddenly gone or broken, this also applies to all the photos, videos and contacts that are stored on it. But only half of smartphone users in Germany back up their data (51 percent). This is the result of a representative survey of 1,004 people in Germany aged 16 and over, including 780 smartphone users.

Accordingly, 30 percent use the automatic backup or data backup function of their device. 7 percent do not back up their data automatically, but rather on their own initiative. 14 percent play it particularly safe and use both options at the same time.

“Most people have important information and valuable memories stored on their smartphones. Everyone should carry out regular backups in order to secure them permanently.”

Dr. Sebastian Klöß, Head of Consumer Technology at the digital association Bitkom

13 percent of those who back up their data use a paid service via a cloud - the vast majority rely on free offers (70 percent). 33 percent store the data on external devices such as a laptop, PC or hard drive.

Data backup tips:

  • Regular backup copies, also known as backups, ensure that personal data is retained even if the device is defective or lost. The backed up data can then be easily restored on a new device.
  • Most smartphones offer an automatic backup function. For Apple this works via iCoud, for Android it works via Google Drive.
  • When Apple and Android automatically back up photos and files, contacts, calendars, bookmarks, notes and device settings are also backed up.
  • The data can also be backed up by synchronizing with a laptop or PC, using an external hard drive or in another cloud storage.
  • Free cloud storage is limited in size, but often offers enough space for standard use. Larger memories are subject to a charge.
  • Important: Protect the cloud account with a secure password. Optionally, additional security features such as two-factor authentication can also be activated to further increase security.
