Particularly popular at the moment are competitions that give away cinema tickets and end in a subscription trap. But data collectors also attract users to affiliate programs.

The Bonn police are warning of a nationwide scam in which cinema Facebook pages are currently being faked. A competition is advertised on these profiles, which look deceptively similar to the real ones. The aim of the fraudsters is to obtain users' credit card details and other personal information.

This was also the case in a Bonn case: Fraudsters had been enriching themselves with such a false competition since the end of November using a false Facebook profile from the Bonn cinema “Woki”. As the alleged winner of a cinema voucher, the fraudsters asked their victims to leave their credit card details for a small service fee. As a result, the credit cards were misused.

Several criminal complaints were filed with the Bonn police. After the scam became known, the fraud investigators from the responsible criminal commissioner 24 immediately informed Facebook about the fake page. This was eventually removed too. According to the current state of the investigation, there is another fake profile for the cinema online that uses the same scam to try to get credit card details.

The police advise:

  • In general, be careful who you trust with sensitive data online. Only do this on sites you know are reputable.
  • Under no circumstances should you give out your credit card details to anyone who takes part in competitions online!
  • An indication of a fake profile could be the number of followers. Since the site is usually relaunched, only a few users follow it. In addition, the posts often contain spelling errors.
  • Be sure to report it to the police if you have fallen victim to such a scam. Don't forget to have your credit card blocked immediately by calling 116 116.

We also repeatedly report on fraudulent fake profiles that organize fake competitions on Facebook and promise movie tickets. Many of these competitions lead to subscription traps .
