The organization has had a familiar abbreviation for a long time... and inevitably had to change it.

Reason: The Internet, the evil one! That's why the honorable World Taekwondo Federation , which has had that particular abbreviation since its founding in 1973, had to change.

of horror on our part (What the F...?), but was actually the abbreviation of the World Taekwondo Federation : WTF .
Instead, they changed their name to World Taekwondo , or WT for short.

It is unclear why this change is only really becoming known now, as it already took place in 2017 before the start of the Taekwondo World Championships in Muju, South Korea, as BBC reported at the time . But only now are we receiving inquiries as to whether this is a fake.

Sensible name change for the World Taekwondo Federation

WT President Choue Chung-won said internet slang had led to the abbreviation no longer being associated with the organization, so it was important to rename itself to better connect with fans remain.

Quite understandable, because if you googled WTF these days you'd have a hard time coming across the organization's website!

“However, World Taekwondo (WT) is distinctive and easy to understand, and it strengthens the global nature of our sport.
Our vision is Taekwondo for all and as World Taekwondo we are confident that we can build on our previous success and achieve this vision.”

said Choue Chung-won.

One can only hope that Chung-won doesn't find out what WT means in Internet slang: namely White Trash , a derogatory term for America's white underclass.
