The fires in Australia are said to have completely different causes: arson on a larger scale.

At least that is what is claimed from several quarters. Some people go even further and write about “left-green arsonists” who started the fires in order to have arguments for the climate discussion. Over 180 arsonists are said to have already been arrested in Australia.

The conclusions of some sites and accounts: Many fires were started intentionally and there was no connection to climate change.

Where do the numbers come from?

These aren't even made out of thin air, but actually have a reputable source:
A New South Wales special unit reported that it has already taken legal action against more than 180 people for bushfire-related offenses since the end of last year.

It helps to read more than the first sentence!

Apparently some people bothered to at least click on the NSW Police Force report, but only read the first sentence and then made up their own theories.
The report goes into the number in a little more detail:

Since November 8th, legal action has been taken against a total of 183 people (including 40 young people) in Australia for 205 bushfire offenses - from warnings to criminal charges.

  • 24 people for allegedly intentionally lighting bushfires
  • 53 people for alleged non-compliance with the total fire ban
  • 47 people for throwing away lit cigarettes or matches

The remaining 59 people were reported for minor offenses (unintentional behavior, carelessness, minor suspected cases).

The penalty in Australia for deliberately starting a bushfire is up to 21 years in prison, while starting a fire during a total fire ban is up to 12 months in prison and/or a fine of $5,500.

Conclusion

Due to the size and number of fires, the number of reports against fire safety offenses also increased, including, for example, a warning against a 9-year-old boy who started a grass fire with a blowtorch for other children while they were playing, a 27-year-old man, who built a fire to make tea on the Fowler Reserve and a 35-year-old man who lit a barbecue and burned fence posts.

However, over 180 people have not been investigated for starting bushfires, this is purely the total number of fire safety offenses since November 2019!
