It was just another day until 9to5Google came across something that sent the online community into a frenzy. X, the platform we once knew as Twitter, has made a change that has people shaking their heads. And it seems that even die-hard users have overlooked this innovation so far.

Under the radar: What has changed? Anyone who browses profiles while logged out will notice: the messages, previously called “tweets,” are no longer in the order in which they were posted. Instead, X sorts them by the number of likes. Surprised? Perhaps. Worrying? Depends on the perspective.

The difference counts: Likes instead of chronology on Twitter

Some may say, “What does it matter?” But this change could have far-reaching consequences. Think about the aspiring artist or writer who recently shared a post about their latest project. If this post doesn't get enough likes, it could be buried in a logged out user's stream, overshadowed by older but more popular posts.

Many of us use the “Pinned Post” feature to place important news or highlights at the top of our profile. But even if that post has thousands of likes, it won't appear at the top for logged out users. A paradoxical step when you consider what a “pinned” post is actually supposed to mean.

Why this change?

This is where it gets speculative, but could it be that X is trying to get new or sporadic users to log in or register? Showing the most popular posts first could stimulate interest. This is a hypothesis, but it has its appeal.

Continuous change: X's relentless (sometimes absurd) innovations: Since Elon Musk took the helm, X has undergone a number of changes. Converting TweetDeck to a subscription is just the tip of the iceberg. It's clear that the company is constantly looking for ways to reinvent itself and stay relevant.

Conclusion: Evolution or Revolution?

X's decision to sort posts by likes instead of chronology is certainly a bold move. It's a change that could completely transform the user experience. For some it could be frustrating, for others it could be an incentive to get more involved and collect likes. Whatever the intention behind it, one thing is certain: X isn't standing still, and we can't help but look forward to what comes next.
