Young people in Austria love WhatsApp (used by 83 percent), YouTube (78 percent) and Instagram (71 percent).

The Youth Internet Monitor is an initiative of Saferinternet.at and presents current data on the social media use of Austria's young people . Which social networks are currently popular with young users in Austria? Which networks do girls prefer to use? Which ones have the edge among boys?
Which social networks do young people in Austria use in 2019?
- Whatsapp (83%) (-2% | 2018: 85% | 2017: 93% | 2016: 94%),
- YouTube (78%) (-3% | 2018: 81% | 2017: 90% | 2016: 87%),
- Instagram (71%) (+8% | 2018: 63% | 2017: 68% | 2016: 55%),
- Snapchat (52%) (-7% | 2018: 59% | 2017: 65% | 2016: 52%),
- Facebook (44%) (-8% | 2018: 52% | 2017: 48% | 2016: 69%),
- FB Messenger (26%) (NEW RAISED).
What are the biggest changes compared to last year?
Compared to last year, it is particularly evident that most of the major platforms have lost, with the exception of Instagram (+8%) . It also shows that platforms for digital games are becoming more important. Twitch (15%), the streaming video portal on which you can watch video gamers live or start your own broadcasts, was able to increase usage again this year (+6%). Also included in the survey for the first time this year was Discord (13%), a network specifically for video gamers that offers chat as well as voice and video conferences.
Skype falls behind, Facebook Messenger rises again
Skype, which was ranked 6th directly behind Facebook in 2018, has fallen back to 8th place. The usage figures fell by 12 percentage points to 18 percent. Facebook Messenger, which 26 percent of young people use, was surveyed for the first time this year. This puts it in 6th place. TikTok (formerly Musical.ly) remains stable in 7th place with an increase of almost 2 percentage points (19%).
Which social networks do girls use and which boys use?
The Youth Internet Monitor 2019 makes it clear that there sometimes large differences between the genders. WhatsApp (girls 87% / boys 80%), Snapchat (girls 60% / boys 45%) and TikTok (girls 24% / boys 15%) are currently significantly more popular with girls than with boys.
In contrast, YouTube (girls 73% / boys 82%), the video platform for computer games Twitch (girls 4% / boys 26%) and the network for video gamers Discord (girls 3% / boys 23%) are used by significantly more males used by young people.

A representative online survey was carried out by the Institute for Youth Culture Research for the Youth Internet Monitor 2019. 400 young people between the ages of 11 and 17 were January and February 2019 about their use of social networks.
